Google is set to launch his new smart phone on 5th Jan 2010, in competition of Apple's iPhone. The Google-branded device will use its latest Android operating system called Anrdoid 2.1.Android is already being used in more than a dozen smart phones by many vendors, including Motorola and Samsung.
According to technology blog Gizmodo the Nexus One will be sold unlocked on a Google website for $530. The phone will work on GSM cellphone networks and will be offered at a subsidised price of $180 in the US by fourth-ranked carrier T-Mobile with a two-year talk and data contract costing $80 a month.
The Nexus One is likely to have a 3.7-inch AMOLED (active matrix organic light emitting diode) touch screen.
AMOLED, which is a bright display technology, needs no backlighting for the device to function. Since there is no backlight, touch screen looks brighter.
The Google GSM smart phone will also have a 5-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi connectivity.
According to mobile industry bloggers, Google may sell the smart phone unlocked, thus not locking buyers in long-term contracts with carriers.
At its annual Searchology event at the Googleplex headquarters San Francisco, Google announced exciting new features that unveiled that “communication, knowledge, health, education and understanding people” is the next frontier of their search tool. This signature search tool is governed by its ability to search by sight, a mobile translator and everyday real-time search of more than one billion social media pages. The real time search technology of Google is a product of partnerships with Facebook and MySpace and Twitter.
This time Google is working to bind its search service more closely to cell phones. The search engine giant unwrapped a new search option called “Google Goggles” that allows users to submit pictures in place of key words as queries, allowing for identification of images taken via cell phones. In his statement, Google’s vice president engineering Vic Gundotra unveiled that “It’s our goal to be able to identify and recognize any image. It represents our earliest efforts in the field of computer vision”
Gundotra also said that the company is also capable of integrating facial recognition into the technology but due to the consideration of privacy implications it is holding up the implementation. In their effort to support all the major languages of the world, the company’s vice president also showed off the search engine’s capability to translate a spoken phrase from English to Spanish using a mobile phone. This feature is planned to be launched early next year.
The search results in future would also feature the company’s “near me now” technology prioritizing location-based items. Google’s new advancements and technologies are sure to provide a new search that will roll out worldwide in the coming days. Hats off to Google!
An Ecosia search engine was launched on Monday 7th Dec.Christian Kroll and his Berlin-based company developed the search tool. The tool is counting on the world's fascination with the Internet to help save Brazilian rainforests and battleglobal warming. It is able to save up to 2 square meters of rain forest every time you start searching something.
A brain child of "green-minded friends" in Berlin, ecosia.org is powered by Bing and Yahoo! search technology but gives at least 80 percent of its revenue to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to protect rainforests. Servers for the Ecosia search engine are able to work on green electricity. A user has to install it only once but engine notifies you how much of the rainforest your web searching stores.
Ecosia added that each search on Google generates as much CO2 as a light bulb creates in one hour.
A World Wide Fund spokesman underlined that a lot of things can be done in case a user switches his search engine to a greener one. He also said that a user is able to defend about 2,000 square meters of rainforest every year if he uses Ecosia. In case 1% of Internet users all over the world utilizes Ecosia for their Web searches it will be possible to keep rain forest area as big as Switzerland each year.
