Blog Promo Tips - Released

1. Blog search engines: sites like Technorati (www.technorati.com), Google Blog Search (blogsearch.google.com), and Blog Search Engine (www.blogsearchengine.com) all allow you to add your blog if the site isn't already receiving your RSS feed. Some engines, like Technorati, also allow you to create a profile and use keywords to describe your blog, allowing others to find it easier in a search.

2. Industry blog aggregators. Some industry aggregators may already get your feed through search engines like Technorati if your blog is listed and tagged with a matching keyword. For example, Social Psychology Arena is a blog aggregator that displays all of the blogs they've found through Technorati that are tagged with "social psychology." You can do an Internet search on "blog aggregator" and the name of your blog's industry or field.

3. Blog carnivals. There are blog "round-ups" of specific posts that related to an industry, field, or topic, usually hosted weekly, monthly, or some other recurring time period on a volunteer's blog. Check out www.blogcarnival.com for a carnival on your topic. As an example, I found one for psychology articles here: http://blogcarnival.com/bc/cprof_7900.html. Once you've contributed to a carnival and gotten to know the organizers, you might be able to volunteer to host one of the carnivals, thus driving more traffic to your blog, even as they're reading about others' blogs.

4. Read and comment on other blogs in your field. When you leave a comment, you have the option to link back to your blog. Interesting comments can often generate hits, especially if you're commenting on popular blogs with lots of readers. But you need to actually read the posts and make relevant comments, otherwise it's considered spam.

5. Consider guest bloggers (others posting on your blog about your field) or interviewing notable people in your field on your blog. Both can drive traffic to your blog because they're interested in the other person, and while they're there, they discover the gem that your blog is, too.

And the easy places, many of which I see you've already done. Link to your blog from:

6. Your website (if applicable).

7. LinkedIn. When you edit your profile, use the name of your blog as the link title rather than "My blog." This builds name recognition.

8. Facebook. If you haven't done so already, you can also have your blog posts imported automatically as notes onto your personal profile. Also, you can network your profile and your blog by using the NetworkedBlogs application through Facebook. And just today, one of my connections posted this in her status update: "[Name] thinks that if all of my Facebook friends click on my blog, I'll get a whole bunch of hits. I'm trying to get the average daily visits to stay over 100. Here's the URL in case you're interested!"

9. StumbleUpon (www.stumbleupon.com) and Digg (digg.com) which work much like the blog search engines except these are by recommendation of those who use the sites.

10. Twitter. You can create a personalized Twitter background and include your blog URL on it (it won't serve as a link, but folks can copy and paste or type it in). You can also tweet blog updates with the URL shortened. If you use an URL-shortener like bit.ly (http://bit.ly) you can also track click-through to see how many people are clicking on that link.

The list of where and how you can get the word out is ever-growing, but hopefully this will help!
