FaceBook Shop In India

(Reuters) - Popular social-networking site Facebook will open an office in India, joining a long list of international firms that have looked to tap a skilled workforce that provides support services at relatively cheap wages.

The Indian social networking space which was ruled by Google owned Orkut till recently has now been replaced by Facebook. According to Alexa, Facebook is the fourth most visited site in India after Google.co.in, Google.com and Yahoo.com
As on FaceBook Blog :
As more and more people share and connect on Facebook, we are growing our operations and teams to support them around the world. Just last week, we announced plans to invest in a new Austin, Texas, office, and today in India we unveiled our intentions to open an office in Hyderabad.
Both of these offices will allow us to better serve the more than 400 million of you now using Facebook worldwide, as well as our growing number of advertisers and developers. We are now hiring people to join the online sales and operations teams that we’re forming in these new locations.
By having multiple support centers in a variety of time zones, we can provide better round-the-clock, multi-lingual support.
India is a large social media market and though Facebook has a a real firm position in country, there are even more possibilities that remain unexplored. The challenges and competition is on a rise with newer sites coming up. India has been a development base for most of the top tech players for a long time now. The availability of talent at affordable rates has lured many to have multiple offices at various parts of the country.

A LOOK AT GOOGLE SOCIAL SEARCH

Overview
With Google Social Search you can carry out search based on content published by your friends and contacts.

Important dates
26 October 2009
. Google Social Search goes live. But only as
an opt-in Google Labs feature.
27 January 2010. Google Social Search is released in beta status, and becomes a standard feature on Google.com for signed-in users

Features (highlights)
My Social Circle: shows your extended network of online contacts and how you're connected.
My Social Content: shows your published content as it appears in other people’s social search results.

Google Images
: you can view pictures from contacts in social circles

How does Google Social Search find content?
Mainly through your social Google profile. You can select what information you want to share.

Facebook
One of the most contentious issues with Google Social Search at the moment is that most Facebook content is outside the reach of Google Social Search.
Google has expressed an interest in indexing and returning Facebook status updates in its search results. But it’s not up to Google as this is part of a bigger issue concerning Facebook and its approach to members’ privacy in general.
Any Good?
I found everything I wanted / expected, really, in its features. The Facebook issue has to be, surely, significant to the overall appeal of Google Social Search in general.

The main Google Social Search Demonstration video

(here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqWJxgp-_mU) did make me think about social search in general. The video brings up the scenario of visiting another country, and finding out what content your friends have published on that subject. Sure, this is an interesting use for Social Search, but it made me think that people are still going to depend a lot more on traditional, algorithmic search (i.e. Google takes them to a website such as Lonely Planet, or to web sites where travellers in general recount their experiences etc ..) than social search for a particular topic like this. In their next example, they discuss finding information about moving from blackberry to iPhone. I would have thought it would be much more effective – for people in general – to use traditional search to find good advice on such an issue. Lastly, they give an example of using Social Search to find out information about local restaurants. Of the three examples, this, I thought was the best one (surely, recommending restaurants – and other similar types of local businesses - is very usual amongst friends in life in general?).

How will Google Social Search fare in the world of business? The demonstration video didn’t refer to its use in a business environment at all. I can imagine people in businesses seeing Google Social Search as, potentially, another channel for marketing their business (compared to those who use social media for personal use and are more apt to keep their content private – between friends) as well as being a useful search tool in general. But it’s early days yet to say anything more concrete than that.

Stop Micro-blogging - Malaysia Warns !

The Malaysian Goverment has warned internet users for excessive use of micro-blogging sites like FaceBook,Twitter,Orkut etc, arguing that they could erode the country's culture.

The Information and communication minister Mr. Rais Yatim said that Muslims and other religious groups must be away of the internet as it was introduced by the west.

"We are not saying they cannot use Facebook or Twitter, but when using such facilities, they must upkeep the values taught by Islam, Buddhism or Christianity to maintain our culture,"

Rais said users must not be influenced by what they see and hear when using the Internet."We must be strong in our belief and culture because the identity and image of our country depends on us,"

Searchology

Google Searchology 2009

At its annual Searchology event at the Googleplex headquarters San Francisco, Google announced exciting new features that unveiled that “communication, knowledge, health, education and understanding people” is the next frontier of their search tool. This signature search tool is governed by its ability to search by sight, a mobile translator and everyday real-time search of more than one billion social media pages. The real time search technology of Google is a product of partnerships with Facebook and MySpace and Twitter.

This time Google is working to bind its search service more closely to cell phones. The search engine giant unwrapped a new search option called “Google Goggles” that allows users to submit pictures in place of key words as queries, allowing for identification of images taken via cell phones. In his statement, Google’s vice president engineering Vic Gundotra unveiled that “It’s our goal to be able to identify and recognize any image. It represents our earliest efforts in the field of computer vision”

Gundotra also said that the company is also capable of integrating facial recognition into the technology but due to the consideration of privacy implications it is holding up the implementation. In their effort to support all the major languages of the world, the company’s vice president also showed off the search engine’s capability to translate a spoken phrase from English to Spanish using a mobile phone. This feature is planned to be launched early next year.

The search results in future would also feature the company’s “near me now” technology prioritizing location-based items. Google’s new advancements and technologies are sure to provide a new search that will roll out worldwide in the coming days. Hats off to Google!

Happy Blogging !
