What can get you penalized by Google !

Unfortunately, it’s a sure thing that Google is not going to publish the criteria it uses for deciding who gets penalized. So we have to make an educated guess. In the SEO community, our opinions come from spending a lot of time–in some cases years–observing what does, and doesn’t get good results. As with just about any other aspect of SEO, most of what I’m about to say here will be met with cyber-cries of ‘but I disagree,’ or ‘I can prove otherwise,’ pr even expletives! That’s the nature of what we do–there’s always a lot of room for disagreement.
If you have been following SEO best-practices closely for some time, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll fall foul of the search engines to the degree that you get penalized. But sometimes as SEO warriors, we inherit a bad situation that someone else has created, and it’s not always obvious at first glance.

Google Sandbox or Penalty?

Before I continue, it’s worth mentioning that there’s a difference between a Google penalty and being flung in the Google sandbox. Actually people have questioned whether the sandbox even exists. But I think it’s fair to assume that it does. It is a common phenomenon that a new site will simply fail to show up: it won’t get indexed at all for weeks, or even months. It seems that until a new site or new pages earns its trust as far as Google is concerned, it sometimes don’t show up (are not even indexed) for a long period of time.

Penalized: Knowingly or Unknowingly!

Sometimes an unscrupulous marketer–and I don’t use the term SEO here because in my book, search engine optimization does not include underhanded tricks of any kind–will use a technique that he knows may have a backlash later on, in order to achieve short- term gains to impress site owners. He or she will do this on the assumption that by the time the penalty is served up by Google, he or she will be long gone and no one will know what happened (and maybe even call said marketer back and pay them more money to sort it out).
More often though, a penalty is served simply because someone did something unknowingly.
So whether you are a freelance SEO or an in-house SEO you will need to be aware of what it looks like when a site has been penalized so that you can do a little detective work to find out what the problem is and quickly get your site back into the search stream.
The most obvious sign that you’re being penalized is if you’re not showing up in a search for keywords that you’re clearly optimizing for.  But perhaps the first thing you’ll notice is a sudden, drastic falling-off of traffic. Be careful here though: a sudden decline in traffic doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ve been penalized. It could just be that search trends have changed and the terms you were optimizing for are suddenly nowhere near as popular as they were. This does happen, and it’s one of the reasons why we recommend constant review of the search terms you use.
But there are other more subtle signs of search engine penalties.

The Specifics of Getting Penalized

  • If you feel that a Google penalty may have been incurred for any reason, the place to start is Google Webmaster Tools. Here you will find complete check lists to help you detect a problem if there is one. Go through the list and make sure that you are complying with Google’s list of best practices.
  • Compare your site’s Microsoft rank with Google. If you are on page 1 over at Bing and Yahoo, yet you’re not even showing on Google, then chances are you have been penalized.
Just to recap, although you can find this information all over the Web, here are items that Google WILL CERTAINLY  impose a penalty for:
  • Keyword stuffing: putting the same two or three keywords over and over again throughout your page will trigger alarm bells over at Google.
  • Cloaking: any form of disguising text is a huge no-no with Google.
  • Obviously-commercial content, where a few sentences that are usually not useful to anyone are woven around a set of keywords, purely for the purposes of Adsense, will probably get you penalized.
  • If you link to a website that is in a ‘bad neighborhood’ you could incur a penalty. Even sharing an IP address (as with shared hosting) can seriously damage your site if you have some notoriously bad sites on there. This is just one reason why it’s worth paying a bit extra to get the best shared web hosting: avoiding being associated with the spam and porn sites.
  • You’re acquiring links too fast and it doesn’t look natural: Google may assume you’re buying them or doing something else unethical to attract attention.
  • There has been disagreement lately over whether duplicate content will get you a penalty. I say it most definitely will (I’ve tested this one out many times myself). Even if, best case scenario, Google chooses to honor the most relevant version of the content, whether that be because it’s most relevant to the website, oldest (and therefore original) version, or for some other reason, who would want to take that chance if you can pick the option to have fresh, unique content on your website or blog?
  • If all your pages have the exact same title tags, again you’re going to get penalized. Each title tag for every page of your site should be unique and carefully chosen.

PayPal Update : RBI has allowed us to continue local bank withdrawals

We have been diligently working with the RBI and our business partners to resume Indian bank withdrawals for the thousands of Indian businesses who depend on PayPal to sell their goods or services in the global marketplace.

Today, we are happy to announce that the RBI has allowed us to continue local bank withdrawals for settlements for exports of goods and services.  We are currently making changes to comply with Indian regulations for settlements for exports of goods and services, and we anticipate that, as of Wednesday,

March 3rd, customers will be able to use our bank withdrawal service.

As part of the changes, you will be required to fill out a new field entitled 'Export Code' when you request a withdrawal. This information is required under the current laws of India in order to identify the nature of cross-border merchant transactions.

Moving forward, the RBI has told us that PayPal needs specific approvals to allow personal remittances to India, which we currently do not have.  Until we get these approvals, personal payments into India will remain suspended.  However, if you are an exporter, you will continue to be able to use the PayPal service for payments of goods and services.  In fact, with the changes we are making to our system, PayPal is now set to be a more powerful engine for exporters in India.  With purpose codes for export transactions and FIRCs (Foreign Inward Remittance Certificates), you should now be able to get the export related benefits you seek.

You can check the PayPal blog for additional updates.

Time For Yahoo Tweets

Hi Friends

Tweets Tweet Ton's ! Yahoo and Twitter announced a deal to put Twitter feeds on Yahoo homepages, e-mail accounts, Yahoo Sports and other sites in a broad content-sharing agreement that also includes Twitter in Yahoo search results.

The Yahoo-Twitter partnership would be bigger and more encompassing than Twitter’s partnership with Google and Bing.

Yahoo has entered into a partnership with Facebook earlier and has offered to provide the services of Facebook from inside the Yahoo pages. Facebook is currently the second most visited site in the world after Google. Twitter is the most popular micro-blogging platform, with an average of 50 million tweets per day.

Turn Off Buzz

Till now every one was thinking that Google Buzz is a one way buy friends it is not. Buzz is two way. I saw a video which states "You Hate Buzz, but Google Runs the Internet " but the other side of coin is different.

Here the great "G" gives you an option to "turn off the Buzz". If you want to off Buzz than you have to scroll down the main Gmail page. there you are able to find the option "turn off buzz". Just click on that and close the Buzz Light.

Google has provide the another option to off the Buzz,go to "setting"  located at the top right-hand corner of the page. The company included a “Buzz” option to the main settings due to which you are able to hide as well as disable Buzz.

Do remember in case you disable Buzz, your Google Profile and Buzz posts will also be deleted and as a result you will be disconnected to any connected sites.

Inside AdWords: Policy adjustment for display URLs

A new change in the display URL policy has been declared.

Policy adjustment for display URLs

The change will take place in the policy for URL’s displayed for the ads that lead to hosted domains.

The sub-domain part of the domain needs to be displayed along with the main domain.

This policy can be understood with the help of an example. Let’s say if the URL for the AdWords blog is http://adwords.blogspot.com, then in that case, the display URL according to rules should be adwords.blogspot.com and not just blogspot.com. This change applies to all URL's.

Why did Google not follow robots.txt directive?

The video clearly shows that Google sometimes lists your blocked urls, but shows no description, meaning that they have not “crawled” those urls but still list them as they found them, thereby abiding by robots.txt. Sometimes they extract the description from the ODP, and not by actually crawling the url. So many times these Google search results are just an ‘uncrawled url reference’

Google launching Smart phone on 5th Jan 2010

As i discussed earlier about the Google Launching Cell Phone.

Google is set to launch his new smart phone on 5th Jan 2010, in competition of Apple's iPhone. The Google-branded device will use its latest Android operating system called Anrdoid 2.1.Android is already being used in more than a dozen smart phones by many vendors, including Motorola and Samsung.

According to technology blog Gizmodo the Nexus One will be sold unlocked on a Google website for $530. The phone will work on GSM cellphone networks and will be offered at a subsidised price of $180 in the US by fourth-ranked carrier T-Mobile with a two-year talk and data contract costing $80 a month.

The Nexus One is likely to have a 3.7-inch AMOLED (active matrix organic light emitting diode) touch screen.

AMOLED, which is a bright display technology, needs no backlighting for the device to function. Since there is no backlight, touch screen looks brighter.

The Google GSM smart phone will also have a 5-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi connectivity.

According to mobile industry bloggers, Google may sell the smart phone unlocked, thus not locking buyers in long-term contracts with carriers.
